Latest Research Positions and Projects
During the period 1996-1999 I have been
participating in several research activities in the Department of Computer
Science and Information Systems of University of Jyvaskyla due to research
grants from CIMO and Academy of Finland. Research was supervised by Prof. Seppo
Puuronen. The main goals of the research were to recognize and solve some
problems taking place in knowledge acquisition and integration from multiple
information/knowledge sources, context-sensitive reasoning and other
techniques. Another group of goals was related to designing architecture of an
integrated knowledge discovery management system, which enables integration of
multiple discovery techniques forming a platform upon which different knowledge
discovery applications can be build. During that period some innovative
metamodeling tools, such as Semantic Metanetwork
and Metapetrinet, were
developed to support management of data and knowledge from distributed sources
and processes.
I was working as Senior Researcher (since
October 2000 until August 2001) in the Information Technology Research
Institute of the University of Jyvaskyla in the Multimeetmobile
(MMM) project which stands for multimedia, electronic commerce and
transactional services for mobile computing. MMM research area is mobile
computing and more specifically mobile E-Commerce and mobile Location-Based
Services. MMM was mainly financed by the Finnish National Technology Agency
(TEKES) under contracts 40599/99 and 40779/99. The MMM industry partners are
Nokia Networks, Yomi Vision, and Hewlett Packard Finland. Via Information
Technology Research Institute the project closely related to the MeT initiative as an
Associate Member of it. This initiative was founded to establish a framework
for secure mobile transactions, ensuring a consistent user experience
independent of device, service and network. Ericsson, Matsushita, Motorola,
Nokia, Siemens, and Sony Corporation, has joined the MeT initiative. Project
also linked to Wireless
Information Management (WIM) research and training network involving
researchers from six universities in Denmark, Finland, Lithuania, Norway, and
Sweden. My duties in this project were to design the model and its
implementation plan concerning the transaction monitor for mobile electronic
commerce based on integration of various e-services in mobile environment with
appropriate ontological support.
I was acting as KNURE's team leader in the OntoWeb IST Network Project: “Ontology-based
information exchange for knowledge management and electronic commerce”, which
is Thematic Network of about 250 academic and industrial partners inside and
outside Europe. The goal of the network is to bring together researchers and
industrials promoting interdisciplinary work and strengthening the European
influence on Semantic Web standardisation efforts.
I am also working in Agora
Center in the InBCT
project (Innovations in Business, Communication and Technology) as a
part-time Senior Researcher since April 2002. The project will be realised in
co-operation with companies engaged in business activities in the area. It is
part of the ICT strategy program of Central Finland. The project is carried out
with EAKR financing of TEKES. The objective of this project is to create new
and to develop existing know-how in the area, and the transfer of this know-how
to the operating companies. My duties in this project are to collect experience
and to develop know-how related to Semantic Web area and then share know-how
with industrial partners. Several presentations
on this subject have been already made in numerous meetings with TeliaSonera,
NOKIA, TietoEnator, Metso, Science Park and other companies. I have created “Industrial Ontologies” Group from
young researchers and became scientific head of it. Also useful research
contacts have been established during that time with USA institutions:
University of California, Berkeley (contact person Prof. John Canny) and
Houston University (contact person Prof. Ioannis Kakadiaris). Since January
2004 I am managing the “Industrial Ontologies in Semantic Web” Chapter in InBCT
Project. We are doing the Prototype of
Semantic Search Facilitator for Internet-search engine (Google) that
enhances performance of user interface for semantic search as well as enables
software applications to automatically use semantic search facilities.
Also during year 2003, me and my group performed research of Semantic Web technology applications for development of web-service based information management systems, particularly in the field of industrial devices maintenance. Among research results obtained there are developed concepts of: OntoServ.Net, an Semantic Web based web-services integration environment for industrial maintenance; GUN – Global Understanding eNvironment, a heterogeneous Semantic Web-based environment for agent-based resource management; OntoAdapter (semantic adapter/wrapper), a generic software component for connection of resources to semantic-enabled environments; OntoShell, a service platform for hierarchical service integration; Mobile Resource, a technical approach for delivering agent-based services in distributed environments.
Due to these results group has started a new Tekes Project: “Smart Resource: Proactive Self-Maintained Resources in Semantic Web” for the 2004 - April 2007 funding period. The research objective of the project is integration of most recent research results, standardization effort, features and benefits of Semantic Web, Web Services, Peer-to-Peer and Agent technologies into an integral resource management framework with resource-to-resource interaction aimed to improve maintenance of separate resources via information sharing and use of other resources as Web services. I am acting as Project Leader of this project. After successful reporting the first and the second project years, the application has been accepted also for project activities in 2006. During 2004-2005 the SmartResource team has been designed a prototype platform for e-maintenance based on Semantic Web and agent technologies. The natural continuation of the SmartResource project from General Adaptation Framework (2004) and General Proactivity Framework (2005) is planned to be a General Networking Framework (GNF) in incoming 2006. The GNF considers opportunity of ontological modeling of business processes as integration of component behavioral models of various business actors (agents representing smart resources in the web) in such a way that this integration will constitute the behavioral model of an agent responsible for the “alliance” of the components. In August 2005, the project team started the series of international conferences: IFIP International Conference on Industrial Applications of Semantic Web.
Industrial Ontologies Research Group is fruitfully cooperating also with
Nokia. We have (February-May 2004) performed the project IdeaMentoring:
“Refining Research Ideas to the New Business Opportunity” (NOKIA, Jyvaskyla
Science Park). Our goal was to create new innovations; evaluate
opportunities for commercialization at the early stages of innovation
development; provide companies more business targeted technology development
services. My role in this project was a team leader. We continued this project
(named as IdeaMentoring-II)
with Nokia also from August until November 2004 and have provided successful
design and implementation of application for camera phones.
I am also a workpackage leader in SCOMA (“Scientific Computing and Optimization in
Multidisciplinary Applications”) project funded by Tekes and Industrial
partners. In this project my group has developed the prototype of the Semantic Web
portal that provides advanced publishing, sharing, and reuse
of the mathematical tools, the expertise and the knowledge distributed among
the heterogeneous SCOMA parties.
I am a project leader in SWIMMER (Semantic Web
Integrator for Maintenance Management of Enterprise Resources) project
(January-November 2007) funded by Metso Automation and related to Semantic Web
based application integration.
For the period May 2007 – December 2010, the Industrial Ontologies Group
was working within Tekes project: UBIWARE: “Smart Semantic
Middleware for Ubiquitous Computing”, where I was acting as a Project
Leader. The UBIWARE solution was based on our innovative Global Understanding Environment
concept.
In 2011 I am coordinating activities of the group within iSCOPE Tekes project
and Cloud Software
Tivit SHOK project.
I was the head of application development team and key expert in a Tempus/Tacis SCM Project (2007-2008) entitled “Towards Transparent Ontology-Based Accreditation” based on consortia of three European Universities from Finland, France and Spain, KNURE and Ukrainian Ministry of Education and Science. The project team is developing transparent procedure for accreditation of universities based on metadata and ontology provided on top of university reported performance. New techniques for ontology-based quality evaluation of various entities of the university education domain are being implemented. Within the project appropriate training has been provided for staff of universities and Ministry of Science and Education on using new transparent evaluation and accreditation system.
I am also a scientific head
or/and consultant of the following projects supported by the Ministry of
Education and Science of Ukraine and performed by Industrial Ontologies Group
(Ukrainian Branch, AI Department, KNURE):
· Ф15/456-2007: “Ontological Portal for Management and Evaluation of National Resources in Education and Science” (2007) (head);
·
ІТ/534‑2009: “Development and
implementation of a distributed architecture of an ontological portal of the
Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine for reliable, safe and effective
management and integration of national educational Resources” (2009-2010)
(head);
·
265/xxxxU00xxxx: “Methods
and Models for a Self-Managed Cloud Ecosystem” (2012-2014) (consultant).
In these projects, the tool (Ontology-Driven Educational Portal for accreditation, licensing, ranking, etc.) is being designed by Industrial Ontologies Group (KNURE branch) and it will be utilized as an ICT support for QA activities of universities and relevant governmental organizations in Ukraine and beyond. The portal is based on Semantic Web technologies and standards and assumes formalization of QA-related knowledge (including the one obtained automatically from external sources via SOA) towards QA- ontology.
Also I have been working on preliminary mapping of potentially threatening technologies as external expert in: FESTOS: “Foresight of Evolving Security Threats Posted by Emerging Technologies” (EU FP7) project (started in 2009).
Also I am coordinating development of the Semantic Portal for Quality Assurance in Education within TRUST project (2011-2013) funded by Tempus. One of the ongoing activities, which are actively utilizing the Executable Knowledge and Global Understanding Environment concepts of the Industrial Ontologies Group, is the EU Tempus-IV Project TRUST: “Towards Trust in Quality Assurance Systems” (516935-TEMPUS-1-2011). The overall goal of the TRUST project is to support the reforms of Ukrainian Higher Education (HE) by introducing a common, innovative, comprehensive and transparent Quality Assurance (QA) framework for all HE institutions (HEI) and QA organizations. The framework is supported by flexible and powerful instrument – Portal, which is work-in-progress, providing a set of solutions that enable, support and automate the activities, information flows and transactions within the ecosystem of individuals, HEIs, and various QA organizations. The core system is extended with mechanisms allowing taking into account flexible multidimensional and multicontextual quality indicators which will reflect constantly variable contexts (caused by political, economical, etc., reasons) at the different user-dependent levels (international, European, national, local) in all aspects of HEIs processes. These enable each HEI or national QA organization to develop own appropriate QA strategies, HEI evaluations, rankings, etc., and provide capabilities for self-proof of decisions. Provided IT-support of QA enables: machine-processable QA-related information; management of globally distributed and heterogeneous QA-related data collections and Web-services; QA-related automated knowledge transfer through intelligent information retrieval, extraction, sharing, reuse and integration.
